Was looking at various bikes again and one thing I always consider is how much it weighs in on the scales. Weight can be good in some ways as it keeps the bike steady and less prone to weaving or scrabbling over the tarmac, however that said good suspension and tyres should take care of that. I say should but not always.

I tend to start drifting off when people start talking about their bloated two wheel mega truck with its supersized sized engine that is invariably capable of producing far more power than the rider can safely handle, drinks fuel like no tomorrow and weighs ridiculous amounts of kg's.

Out of interest I googled the specs on my old Benelli 250 phantom 1974, now granted it is a two stroke and air cooled, but....it had twin shocks, steel tank and frame and swinging arm, steel chromed v rim spoked wheels, drum brakes (Twin on the front), cast iron barrels and it was a twin cylinder, chrome steel headlamp, and chrome mudguards, steel twin exhausts and weighed in at what I would consider a portly 136kg.

Now consider the modern day Repsol Honda 250, okay so its a 4 stroke and its faired and it is liquid cooled so thats going to add weight but it has alloy wheels, fi, mono shock, alloy exhaust, made of modern materials and it is only a single cylinder.  How come it weighs 161 kg and 4 more with abs??

This tends to go throughout the ranges of modern day bikes. The like of the supersports show that manufacturers can make large capacity powerful supersports that weigh not much really with power to weight ratios that could only be dreamed about 40 years ago, but somehow when it comes to the mainstream models and so called adventure bikes the weight seems to climb up out of all proportions, are they just too lazy to shed the weight or is it commonly accepted that bikes weigh far more than they should?

While I love adventure bikes I just cannot figure how in the real world they could function as a true adventure bike, most are nigh on impossible to pick up single handed, the fact if you had a crash and it fell on you it would likely break your leg or similar, even a 250 dirt bike can be hard to haul off you when you bin it let alone 220 kg plus of oversized junk landing on you... They have become the biking equivelent of the Chelsea tractor, the two wheeled version of the landrover discovery and freelander.

I think that is why bikes like the Triumph street triple have been so successful, for a start they have a smaller more economical engine of 675cc with 3 cylinders so it revs clean, gives plenty of torque and bhp (currently 105bhp). That coupled with more sensible weight 182 kg starts to make sense and logic. The Yamaha MT09 is a move in the right direction as well, an 850cc which weighs 188 kg and I am sure there is room for shaving off more weight although die cast aluminium frame makes me think of dinky and corgi toys that shattered as soon as you stepped on them.

All pretty random really, but makes you wonder why bikes have seemly gone the way of cars, ever bigger and heavier, more tech but more weight and so on an so forth.

Its about time bikes returned back to the day when they didn't weigh so much, given the fact that nowadays we can reliably get 200 bhp + per litre why exactly are we dicking around with bikes that have 1400cc engines and above?

Just as an afterthought, a Smart for two is currently the lightest 2015 car at 820 kg supposedly.

The original Mk1 1959 mini with its cast iron engine block weighed 585kg. Are cup holders really that heavy?

I gotta a question. Why could my 1955 AJS return 60mpg have all the torque ever I need, sound great n look great have no battery and just be cool (okay it leaked oil) that's a 60 year old bike as good when I sold it 2 years ago as the day it left the shop in March 1955. Will find a photo....

A good question indeed, why do women lose weight after they lose their partner? Long term relationships seem to to often fizzle out eventually if not kept alive, I guess many women just don't bother putting the time and effort in some times, men probably guilty of this also but to a lesser extent. Women turn into slobs if not kept on their toes.

In my case I did what I could to keep mine going but alas if you are the only one yanking the rope on the bell it comes out like a death toll rather than a delightful symphony of bell ringing chimes.

I dare say when I finally get all this sorted, Michelle will have a revelation and start dressing up and preening herself to land another poor sod into the mire. Best of luck whoever because trust me they will need it.

As the saying goes never trust anything that bleeds for three days and doesn't die biggrin

Paul I reckon you will think is truly incredible. I read your post n thought ... Well tbh I thought it was a wee bit misogynistic so, as you know, I'm keen on words n have a new Oxford English Dictionary delivered every year - I looked up misogyny to find a softer word. The 2015 New English Oxford dictionary defines misogyny examples as see the SDTRF website and FBF's posts. I was shocked mate and have written to them and told them there is no F in SDTR so hopefully that will be corrected for the 2016 edition.

Anyway mate having resolved that - how's the dating website you joined panning out?

Not been on the dating site for a year. Doubt whether I shall bother again tbh. Seems most women of our age are "tainted" goods and have a axe to grind.

I might give it whirl again but at the time it served a purpose admirably.

Major chuckle. I reckon the 2016 Oxford New Entry entry maybe justified.....Not that I give a F either way but now imagining a wee but growing field of bleeding axe sharpeners....or better yet leaving that in a corner of the cosmos and embracing the sophisticated tone of the original version of Tainted Love which I believe was based on a genuine Sado-masochistic heterosexual relationship...Pablo Picasso was never called an *******.

Oops.

i meant to say there should be a lightweight (400cc) twin potted overland bike with great suspension and load carrying capacity n clever switches for off road or motorway riding. It should be attractive, easy to service, uber reliable and bring a smile every time you look at it So you want to use it and abuse it whilst making sure it knows it's loved n wanted. biggrin

Tin mining. You need to look into, remembering pinball, old shats n alleyways try not all....some be good some be less good n some be bad as long as you don't write an "f" you don't be needing to give one.

Arr Longdiddy sing a shanty....

What become of the drunken sailor,
What become of the drunken sailor,
Earli in the morning....
Ooh ray n up she rises,
Ooh ray n up she rises,
What become of the drunken slider,
What becomes of the drunken slider,

No hint o an F

Now go away n clean up your act.

God
