Just a quick question about my oil I changed the oil and filter 2 rides ago and over filled it slightly , I had it half way up the sight glass which according to the manual is a bit more than they recomend . Anyway looked at it tonight and it is now at the exact level the manual says it should be is that normal does it level itself out like the water or am I losing oil there's no signs of drips or leaks on the garage floor

Any help would be much appreciated

I'm banned from giving technical advice Ryan but can say that it's not smoking or smelling bad.

One for Hugh, John, Pete or Lucky to answer...

In time KTM's will start to burn a little oil like many of the more highly stressed MX bikes. When it starts to disappear rapidly then that is the time for a new piston and rings. If it was slightly over I wouldn't worry too much.

Btw if you have just ran it, it does take a little time for all the oil to drain back into the sump, but not long, if it is cold the oil level tends to be lower due to expansion of the oil when it is hot and the fact it thins out and therefore doesn't tend to pool so easy in various areas inside the engine and box.

If it was overfilled then the airbox will be plastered in oil inside. Go by the manual as the level differs from model to model.

Sound advice P.

My last 3 KTM's have not used oil, but they all had new pistons etc.

Thanks for that fbf it was only slightly over filled but when I took the air filter off to clean it it was plastered in oil I thought it was air filter oil but must have been engine oil I've cleaned it out now would that be likely to cause any damage getting engine oil in the air box

Hi Ryan. First time Justin Gibbs serviced my KTM it came back with the oil just showing in the sight glass when cold. I phoned him to tell him he'd short changed me but he assured both KTM Nad Haynes had the mid sight glass level advice wrong as it will get there when hot. I had serviced it myself a couple of times previously (ie I had overfilled it) but nae damage had been caused or manifested four years down the road.....

Thanks Pete mine is just showing on the sight glass when cold now , I've just been reading that you should soak filters before fitting them and some people are saying you should lie the bike on its side and prime the filter houses is that something you do? Its very confusing the Haynes manual is saying half way up the sight glass and people online are saying it should be 1.2 litres I do find the filters take a little while to soak up the oil

Aye I lie the bike on its side. Soak the filters n reckon a liter (ish) of fresh oil as I'm pretty sure I never get all the old oil out. Mines the 400 Exc and I never knowingly stress it... Though I have had stern words with it when it wouldn't start...
