During yesterdays ride my starter motor packed up well it was a bit on and off sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. When it wouldn't I just got a clicking noise from under the seat . When this happens and I put it in gear and rock it back and forth and it would work, sometimes
Anyone got any idea if they can be reconditioned or if it needs taking off and cleaning a second hand one on eBay is just over 100 quid plus 20 quid postage from America and a new one is 164 quid from fowlers. Need to get it sorted as trying to kick start it stuck half way up tally ho nearly killed me
Hi Ryan, Sounds like a loose connection to the solenoid / relay. I had the exact same issue. The relay is in the top of the air filter box. I reckon you will find a loose wire or frayed wire causing a connection issue there. Twiddle it about n see if the issue comes n goes.
hi pete did you have the same thing if you rocked it in gear would make it work i haven't checked the wires yet but on sunday i put a multi meter on the power wire on top of the starter and it was reading 12 volts even when it just made the clicking noise
Ryan I have next to no technical knowledge but I had precisely the same symptoms on my 530 and a new battery fixed it. Couldn't say if it'll work for you, but it's a thought.
Thanks mate but i put a new battery on it fruday nite it
Was working fine untill mr tremlett fettled with the electrics to get the horn working
But im sure that its just a coincidence
No there was no rhyme nor sure fire reason like rocking back n forward to make it work - it was just very intermittent. I actually bought a new solenoid as I was convinced that was the issue but twas just the connection. Doh! All has been fine since I remade the crimps n shortened the wire. Good luck with it - I understand from Mr Gibbs starters are pretty reliable....
Ryan, you could try linking the starter motor directly to the battery with jump leads (or similar). If it turns, the starter motor is ok and the fault is elsewhere. I used this method when the CRF wouldn't start and lived to tell the tale.
Cheers Tim I will investigate this weekend need to get it right for the week after last weekend was hard work without it there was 3 of us trying to kick it over at one point
